The comparison pages

  • The top 100 table: Size, country, founding year, type, funding, transparency, returns and how each fund invests.
  • Size vs transparency: Do the biggest funds tell you the most? Scores by size band, region and item.
  • Who publishes returns: Which funds report one-year and long-term returns, and what they report.
  • Deal activity: Who did the most and the biggest deals in our tables, and with whom.
  • Regional comparison: Middle East and Gulf, Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Pacific side by side.
  • Fund types compared: Development, savings, stabilisation, holding and pension reserve funds.
  • Industry insights: how these funds invest across the main sectors.

How we rank

  • Rank is by each profile's headline size in US dollars. Each fund reports on its own basis (fund value, total assets, net assets or AUM), so the order is a guide, not a precise league table.
  • Where only an estimate exists, it counts and is labelled estimate.
  • Proposed and pipeline funds are excluded until they hold assets.
  • The ranking moves as funds publish new figures; this page is rebuilt from the profiles each time.

What this means for you

  • The capital is concentrated. If you only have time for 25 relationships, the top 25 hold 87% of the top 100's assets.
  • Size is not access. Many of the largest funds invest through external managers and large direct deals; smaller development funds are often easier to reach for domestic projects.
  • Check each fund profile for its mandate, ticket size and how to approach before you reach out.

Data notes: Counts come from the investment, case study and size tables in our fund profiles. They cover the deals each profile lists, not every deal a fund has done, so read them as a guide, not a full census. Sizes are as of the date shown on each fund profile.

Sources

Every figure on this page comes from the fund profiles linked in the tables. Source ids such as S3 refer to the numbered sources on each fund's own profile page, where the original document is listed with its date.
